The Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) announced that the Cabinet approved the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) fare structure for the Klang Valley in the recent Cabinet Meeting held on 29 July, 2015.
The Cabinet approved fare structure consists of a basic fare component of RM0.90 and a distance-based fare component based on per kilometer run which starts at RM0.815 per km for the first 6km, RM0.513 per km for 6 to 12km, RM0.421 per km for 12 to 18km, RM0.282 per km for 18 to 24km and RM0.212 per km for distances more than 24km. The fare structure sets the maximum allowable fares for BRT services by operators. Therefore individual operators are not allowed to impose fares exceeding the fare structure.
In approving the fare structure, the Cabinet also directed that operators provide a 50% discount on fares for students, senior citizens and the disabled on the BRT lines.
The first BRT line in the Klang Valley is the BRT Sunway Line operated by Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (Prasarana). The approved fare structure will not cover the operational costs of BRT at the current levels of ridership, therefore to help commuters enjoy the affordable rates on the BRT line, the Government has approved an annual operational subsidy not exceeding RM14 million for the first three years to Prasarana. This will help offset the difference in fare collection and operational costs to ensure that the fare is set at an affordable level for passengers.
